Marathon was the first in a trilogy of first-person shooter games from Bungie software for the Mac OS in 1994, based partly on the engine used for Bungie's previous but less-successful game Pathways Into Darkness. It was followed by Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity.
On January 17, 2000, Bungie Software released the source code of the Mac OS version of Marathon 2 under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Since then the game has been enhanced and extended, under the name of 'Aleph One', by a team of developers on the Internet. Two of the biggest improvements to the game so far are the addition.
Forge running on Mac OS X under the Classic Environment. Forge is name of the publicly-released map editor for Bungie's Marathon series. It also shares its name with the map editor used in Halo 3.

Marathon takes place in outer space in the year 2794. The player assumes the role of a nameless security officer stationed on the UESC Marathon. The Marathon has arrived in the Tau Ceti solar system and is supporting the colonization effort of the planet, Tau Ceti IV. The game starts with the player making his way to the Marathon on the shuttle Mirata when an alien ship appears and attacks the system. He survives by ejecting seconds before the explosion of the Mirata, and hours later, his officer's escape pod then reaches one of the Marathon docking bays.
There are three AIs aboard the Marathon, each in command of some aspect of ship operations. All of them are under attack by the aliens, after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse from the alien ship. As the game begins, only one of the three AIs, Leela, is still fully functional.

This is the first of Bungie's addicting and popular Marathon series, a Macintosh exclusive. Marathon is a pseudo-3D first person shooter, similar to Doom. It is widely considered to be the precursor to Bungie's epic Halo series. Experience from the making of these games led to Halo: Combat Evolved. It is known for being the first game to allow dual-wielding and mouse looking, and second only to System Shock (released in September of the same year) for vertical aim, reloading, and multiple fire modes for weapons.
